An Old Novel and A New One

I’ve had other blogs in the past, but they’ve disappeared or turned into bad neighborhoods, so here I am at WordPress, starting a new one.  I’m a writer of poems, short stories, and — until now — unpublished novels.  My first novel is coming out this April (2011) from Bottle of Smoke Press.  The title is Death At The Flea Circus, hence that’s also the title of this blog.  I wrote the novel so long ago (1966-ish to 1972-ish) that I no longer remember whether it was difficult or easy, but let me tell you: proofreading is hard work.  I’ve been through the book twice and am starting a third go-through today.  The text is looking great, thanks to editor Bill Robert’s masterful design skills as well as priceless help from professional editor Christa Malone (the daughter of the late Marvin Malone, editor of The Wormwood Review.)  Having a novel actually published (unreal!) is a tremendous motivator, and I’ve started a new one and am about 50 pages into it.  That one’s called The Snake Mother; Naked At Last (I know, it sounds like one of those Naked Gun movies).  It’s set in Salem, with scenes at a local bookstore, in the tunnels under the city, and at Oregon State Hospital, a mental institution.  More on both projects in future posts.
