America, I’m Sick Like Worms In My Belly: Two 1960s Concrete Poems and One Prose Fragment

Today I was looking through my files for a poem I wrote in 1969 and came across a couple of examples of my Concrete Poetry and an odd prose fragment.  The first of these, “ode to the sun” is missing the third part.  I may have cut it from this manuscript and pasted it into the manuscript of Wraethrom, my 1960s experimental fiction / concrete poetry novel.  The second piece is a stand-alone concrete poem titled “sticking my tongue out” that’s dated 1969.  The third piece is an experimental fiction fragment from page 62 of an unknown manuscript.  It’s the beginning of section 5 of whatever it was taken from and ends mid-sentence with the incomplete line “if so, then:”  This may be an early draft of something that later was incorporated into Wraethrom.  The phrase “worms in my belly” suggests that is very possibly the case.  What’s scary is that I have pages and pages of this stuff — old unpublished poems and prose bits from the 1960s and early 70s.  Some of it reads like my comic surreal novel Death At The Flea Circus and may be early drafts or deleted passages from that book, while other pieces are more similar to the material in the final version of Wraethrom.  And then there are obvious stand-alone short stories and poems.  Someday, I hope to publish a fat book of all this early stuff, and the critics be damned.  Read on …
